Experience “Icy” Adventure through Alaskan Cruise

Monday, August 23rd, 2010

When you consider cruising, one of the important factors that you look for is the itinerary. A popular cruise destination includes the Caribbean, Mexican Riviera, the Bahamas, and Panama Canal. It offers quite different vacation treat for cruise ships’ passengers, especially for the first timers.

However, for regular cruise aficionados, they looking for an idea of a cruise that is a little different from the usual destinations previously mentioned. If the itinerary is still the same although they are sailing with different cruise line, the element of uniqueness and excitement is not present in their cruise vacation.

If you are one of those vacationers, who are looking for a different cruise experience, then a cruise trip to Alaska is what you are looking for. You can expect a different landscape, people, and other stuffs that you will not forget.

If you are ready to do something different, then try the Alaskan adventure. It has everything that will suit your need. It is indeed a perfect getaway either for a short excursion or for a long vacation.

Alaska is the largest state in the United States in terms of land area (570,374 square miles); if superimposed over the map of the country, it can cover the states of Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, New Mexico, and Colorado. Although having an enormous land area, it is one of the largely unpopulated areas in the world, with animals outnumbering human settlers.

Its boundaries are marked by natural landscape like mountain ranges and streams. The largest attraction in Alaska is its ice glaciers, which makes it a perfect destination for cruising. Sailing along its lengthy coastline allows you to observe these spectacular sights.

In case you prefer in selecting a cruise that will bring you in Glacier Bay, you will be witnessing the glaciers calving. Calving is the process by which the rivers of ice drop breaks off the edge of the cliff into the sea. Larger mass of glaciers can perform this several times an hour. It is the breathtaking part when you decide to make an Alaskan cruise.

While seeing these glaciers calving, you may also have the urge to touch it. Lucky for you, there are cruise lines that provide helicopter rides and hiking which permits you to step on one of these ice glaciers, which you cannot experience on any other cruise destination in the world.

If you or an Alaskan cruise vacation, you may also want to check Tracy Arm Fjord, which is a stretch of water that ventures inland and away from the shoreline. It will allow you to experience the power of the granite walls, mountain peaks, and majestic waterfalls from an unusual point.

Perfect months on getting an Alaskan cruise are from May through September. In other words, you can expect a decrease in the temperature compared to over hundred degrees temperature in the South during summer season.

There are two most popular Alaskan cruises. The first one is the Inside Passage cruise, which generally runs a length of about a week. It includes itinerary stops at Ketchikan, Skagway, and Juneau. Different sights and side trips can also be expected when you take this cruise.

The second one is the Gulf of Alaska cruise or also known as the Glacier Route Cruise. You can expect to see the Glacier Bay, which is previously mentioned in this article, and possibly the Hubbard Glacier.

Whichever cruise you prefer, cruise lines will provide you options on the ships that you want to board. There are smaller excursion ships that can carry an average of 150 passengers. You can take a closer look at a glacier rather than using the larger cruise ships (see what happened to the famous Titanic vessel).

The choices are all dependent on you. If you are really an adventurous-type individual, you want to book a smaller cruise vessel although it is quite expensive. If sightseeing for you is enough, then a bigger cruise ship is good for you. Don’t worry, though, whichever you choose, always expect the unexpected.

It is all bared—what is Alaska and what can it offer to you. Once you get going, you will forget all about your worries. So board a cruise ship and start your Alaskan cruise right away. Enjoy cruising!

It is a great way to spend vacation with your family or consider it as your honeymoon getaway. Many people would really like to go on a cruise because of the beauty and comfort this type of vacation can offer.

Imagine, a week or more of thinking of nothing but relaxing. As you are traveling to an exotic location in a cruise ship, you won’t have the same amenities and services as you would in traveling by plane. It’s true that planes can take you to your location faster but, cruise ships offer comfort and a lot more activities while traveling. You can take a dip in the cruise ship’s swimming pool while enjoying the view of the fantastic ocean or you can socialize with other passengers in the bar. At night, you can have a luxurious dinner on a real dining room, unlike on cramped spaces on airplanes. You can also have a relaxing massage with the cruise ship’s onboard masseuse. Traveling by cruise ships can get you to your vacation spot more relaxed and more satisfied that traveling by airplane.

However, many people believe that traveling by cruise ships can be expensive. This is a common misconception of people. There are different cruise travel packages that can suit almost every type of people. If you can afford it, you can take the more expensive package that will include butlers tending to your bar in your own suite or if you prefer to save money, you can try the economy class. Both of this is basically the same, if you’re traveling in economy class, you won’t be treated as an outcast or an unwelcome guest.

The crews in cruise ships are very professional and treats economy class passengers the same as they would treat first class passengers. The only difference is that a first class passenger has bigger rooms and usually has butler services.

All passengers can mingle in the ship’s bar and in the casino. All can use the facilities in the ship, like swimming pools, Jacuzzis, and others.

The food offered in cruises has wide variety, you can choose to have a luxurious dinner or you can simply have hamburgers or hotdogs for lunch. Whatever you want, it’s usually all there.

Here are some tips that you can use as a guide when you want to have a cheap cruise.

•  Inquire in travel agencies. A good travel agent can provide you with great cruises that can suit your tastes in travel. He or she can find the best cruise available with your budget. Tell your travel agent on how much you are willing to spend on a cruise and how many will be traveling with you. They usually can always get you the best deals possible even in your limited budget. Just remember to find a travel agent that specializes in cruise travels and vacations.

•  Booking early means discounts. Cruise lines offer big discounts for customers who book early. Booking a month early before the cruise can give you great discounts. Cruise lines offer early bird discounts because they want to fill their ships early.

•  Booking late also means big discounts. It cannot be avoided that some passengers will cancel the trip on the last minute. This would make cruise lines offer big discounts to fill their ships.

•  Inquire about theme packages. Theme packages are great if you are traveling with your family or a group of friends. Many cruise line companies offer discount for group travelers. Also, if you are traveling for your honeymoon, most cruise lines offer honeymoon discounts.

•  Look for packages in the internet. Visit cruise websites to find out about different cruise line packages and their prices. Here, you will have a wide variety of choices for cruise packages and you can also compare the price. There are also some cruise lines that offer online booking discounts.

•  If you have traveled in cruise ships before, it is recommended that you travel again on the same cruise line that you traveled with before. Many cruise lines offer discounts for repeat passengers.

Here is something that you should keep in mind. A real bargain is not by basing it on the price alone but it should be based on how you are satisfied with the trip. If a cruise exceeds your expectations and you go home happy and satisfied, then that’s a real bargain. Going on cruise vacation should be enjoyable and relaxing. If you paid on a cheap cruise but didn’t get what you expected, then it is a failed vacation.

Cruise Ship Activities for Children under Twelve

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Each year, a large number of individuals make the decision to take a cruise.  Cruise ships are a great location to have your next vacation. If given the opportunity, many parents would choose to take a cruise alone. This isn’t because of a lack of love, but because of a common misconception among parents and cruise ships. Many individuals, including parents, believe that cruise ships are not designed for children, but that is simply not true.

If you are the parent of a child under the age of twelve, you may be wondering whether or not they should accompany you on your next cruise.  If you are able to financially afford an additional ticket, you are encouraged to consider bring your child along.  Not only will a cruise be memorable to your child, but it will be exciting. That is because a large number of cruise lines have tailored their cruise ships to children of all ages, including those under the age of twelve.

If you have yet to book your cruise ship reservations, you are encouraged to keep cruise ship activities in mind. The activities for children, under the age of twelve, will vary from ship to ship. That is why it is important that you examine each ship before making a final decision.  Despite the fact that activities will vary from ship to ship, there are many activities geared towards children, under the age of twelve, which can be found on almost all cruise ships.

One of the many popular activities found aboard a cruise ship is a gaming.  Arcade rooms are common on most cruise ships.  They offer children, under the age of twelve, a safe place to have fun and be a child.  Many cruise ship arcade rooms are staffed with cruise ship employees, but this should not deter you from keeping an eye on your child. When leaving them alone in an arcade room, you are encouraged to use your best judgment.

Another fun activity for children, under the age of twelve, includes swimming.  All vacation cruise ships are equipped with a swimming pool.  In addition to an adult sized swimming pool, wading pools can often be found aboard a number of popular family themed cruises.  As with the arcade room, you are encouraged to use your best judgment when allowing your children to swim unattended.  Lifeguards will be on duty; however, they cannot always guarantee the safety of your child.

In addition to a swimming pool and an arcade room, most cruise ships have an onboard movie theater or a performance stage.  A large number of cruise lines offer family friendly movies, plays, and other performances.  Children, under the age of twelve, may find these performances and movie showings fun and exciting. To determine if movie showing and performances are targeted to those under twelve, you are encouraged to check a cruise ship’s itinerary. A ship’s itinerary can be viewed with or without previously booked reservations.

Cruise ship restaurants and other dining facilities are likely to cater to children, under the age of twelve.  Many restaurants offer children’s menus.  These menus are likely to include tasty, but kid sized meals. The cost of your kid’s meals will vary from ship to ship; however, many cruise ships offer discounts on meals for children under the age of twelve.

Cruise ship childcare centers are facilities that benefit both parents and their children.  While on a family vacation, even you need a break. For free or a small fee, you should be able to leave your children in the care of a trained and experienced childcare worker.  Since a cruise ship is likely to have passengers of all different ages, many childcare facilities are grouped together by ages. As with most other services, you will find that a cruise ship’s childcare policy may vary form another’s.

The above mentioned activities, services, and facilities are just a few of the many that are targeted to children, aged twelve and under. If you are satisfied with the above mentioned services, facilities, and activities, you may want to consider scheduling your next family vacation aboard a cruise ship.

Cruising for Special Needs Accommodations

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

If you are disabled or have certain special needs, you can still have a cruise ship adventure.  If you fall into this category, your best bet is to consult with a travel agent to find the best cruise line that will accommodate your needs.

No two cruise lines are quite alike, so comparison shopping is required when choosing your options.  Your particular disability could be the deciding factor on which cruise to take.  For instance, not all cruise ships can accommodate wheelchairs easily.  Cabins are notoriously small, so you must get dimensions to determine if your wheelchair will even fit inside your room.

Luckily, some of the larger cruise lines have specially designated cabins that have wider doorways.  The bathrooms are large enough for a wheelchair to roll right inside.  The closets are built for a lower reach and the elevators have controls easily accessible for those people sitting in wheelchairs.  Some cruise lines will have collapsible wheelchairs available, but it is highly recommended that passengers bring their own.  If motorized wheelchairs are in use, you must bring your own charger that is adaptable to a normal 110 volt plug.

Part of going on a cruise is experiencing the various ports of call.  Small boats called tenders are used to carry the travelers from the cruise ship to shore. Every effort is made to ensure that wheelchair bound passengers get to experience these ports of call.  However, the tenders that take passengers to shore are not always accessible or safe for the disabled.  If the wheelchair bound does manage to safely get to shore, certain ports of call may not always be equipped to handle special needs.

Hearing impaired passengers can also request special accommodations.  Some cruise lines will offer ADA (American Disabilities Association) compliant rooms. They will have tele-typewriters (TTY) or telecommunication devices for the deaf (TDD). These cabins might come with ADA approved kits which include visual smoke alarms, door sensors so you know someone is at your door and even alarms that vibrate.

Travelers with guide dogs or other service animals will have a tougher time finding a suitable cruise.  Each port of call has different rules and regulations regarding animals.  Your travel agent can check with the Department of Agriculture for each port of call to determine their guidelines.  Sometimes the services animals could be denied permission to leave the cruise ship.

Special nutritional needs are also accommodated on many cruise lines.  Vegetarians have options as do those passengers who require low fat, low salt or low cholesterol diets. Guests with lung impairments that require oxygen can cruise too, but must ensure that they have a plentiful supply of oxygen for their travels.

One of the caveats for disabled guests or those with special needs is that you should be autonomous and travel with another companion in case any support during the cruise is required. No matter what infirmities you may have, the cruise line should be notified upon booking.  However, with special planning for your special needs, you should be able to have an extra special adventure!
